Billings -- Montana’s “Magic City” surrounded by six mountain ranges -- is in the south central region’s edge of the Crow Indian Reservation, between the Shoshone and Custer national forests. Billings promotes itself as a “passport to the legendary West,” and with good reason, given a rich history filled with names such as Lewis & Clark, Sitting Bull, and Calamity Jane. As a modern center for culture and commerce, a rich history in cowboys, Indians, rustlers and Custer still dominates galleries, museums, cabins, mansions and historic sites. Shopping can be a boon since Montana has no sales tax. Billings’ cultural events take place throughout the entire year, from Broadway-style productions to professional symphony performances at the Alberta Bair Theater. Dining includes some of the best steakhouses in the West, along with assorted ethnic cuisines from French to Mexican. Accommodations for lodging are equally varied from name brand motels and hotels to intimate inns.
